A silver coin made into a button. Paul Cannon suggests: From the image this appears to be a fractional silver unit of a rupee from the Indian Princely State of Hyderabad. The weight is not recorded, but from the diameter it is probably a ¼ rupee denomination. The coin was struck during the reign of Mir Mahmud Ali Khan II (AH 1285-1329 = AD 1868-1911). Like other rulers of Hyderabad he used the name of the founder of the dynasty ie 'Asaf Jah' who ruled AD 1724-1748 on his coins. The only indication of the true issuer of the coin is a single 'mim' (m) in the centre of the obv…

Complete ring made from plaited silver wire. Each strand of the plait consists of eight wires. The wires in each strand are parallel, though now distorted. The sides of the ring are not straight; they are C-shaped in cross-section, with the exterior of the ring convex and the interior concave. The ring is now slightly squashed, and measures 28.71mm x 24.71mm externally and 19.65mm x 17.15mm internally. Similar rings made of plaited groups of silver wires are known across the country; they vary in size, shape and tightness of plait. Where the wire has been examined it appears to b…

2005 T246. "A silver hoop resembling the frame of a brooch. A break at the outer edge implies a fitting of some sort (stitching loop?) was attached to it. It has a flat back. The front is decorated with a series of twists alternated with bands of small, spherical pellets. The find is of no great age and is likely to be less than 100 years old." Silver shilling from South Africa. Minted in Pretoria it is a Transvaal and Orange Free State Shilling from 1895. It has been cut out from the reverse design which is a man smoking a pipe and wearing a top hat. It was probably used as a pendant as there is the remains of an attachment.

TREASURE CASE 2006 T407: silver ornamental ring This ring has a plain hoop, the bezel formed of an applied foliate ornament which is partly missing and therefore hard to decipher. The general form and construction of the ring suggest a date not earlier than the 19th century. It does not therefore qualify as Treasure. J. Rudoe British Museum 24.2.07

2006 T510 Theydon Bois, Essex Fragment of silver bracelet. Two strands of twisted wire with a zoomorphic terminal. Date: Although this item has similarities with ancient jewellery types, it is likely to be less than 300 years old, and probably originally from Asia. Although the bracelet contains more than 10% precious metal, it is not less than 300 years old so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Treasure case No: 2005 T209 This circular mount for a stone, with petalled border, twisted wire and claw setting is unlikely to be earlier than the late 19th century. The fragmentary bar at the back suggests that it may have served as a sleeve or dress stud. It does not fall within the Treasure Act.

A coarse coiled silver ring of quadrangular section, widening in the middle and tapering at the ends to small, pointed finials. Date uncertain, but probably of fairly recent manufacture (post AD1700). This artefact is undiagnostic, as it is too coarse to be an earring and too small for a nose ring for an animal. Analysis shows that it is 97% silver, but its probable age precludes its inclusion as a treasure item. Information taken from a report by Dr. Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, British Museum. This artefact found at the 2007 Durobrivae Rally, Cambridgeshire.

A silver thimble dating from the nineteenth century. The thimble is 24mm long and has an 18mm diameter at the base. It is typical of thimbles made by Charles Horner of Yorkshire. It has a domed top which, along with the upper half of the walls, is decorated with flower motifs. The lower part of the walls have a waffle pattern and then a plain band on which are the hall marks and makers marks. This object was recorded from a photograph and details kindly provided by the finders. The marks are not clear in the photograph. There is an almost identical thimble on page 60 of “The Collecto…
