A thin, incomplete, unidentified silver component. The item is semi-circular in plan, and retangular in cross section. It appears to be incomplete, with clean and linear break points on the two ends of the circular frame suggesting it has been cut, perhaps before it was intended to be melted down. On what is presumably the front facing surface of the component, there are two parrallel grooves which run along the circumference of the inside edge. The depth of the grooves is not uniform and at points the recesses are too faint to be visible. This may be the result of wear. The…

A small silver fragment, probably a brooch fragment dating to the early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) period c.AD 450-600. The rectangular fragment carries a humanoid face with thick curved brows, a wedge-shaped nose and two sub-oval pellets for eyes. Below the nose is a row of three raised transverse ridges that are punctuated with a central longitudinal groove. The reverse is undecorated. The fragment tapers slightly with the widest end towards the nose area from 4.20 mm to 3.42 mm in width and it has a slightly curved profile. The shorter lengths are damaged and truncated, bot…

Silver unidentified object. Hollow hemispherical boss with a smooth internal surface and a textured outer surface retaining extensive traces of gilding and six short lengths of probably silver drawn wire of diameter 2.1mm. The latter are presumably relicts of a more complex arrangement of coils. Partly melted on its display side, but with a pale buff coating within. The combination of silver and gilding on an object of composite construction might be apt to a dress fitting of the period 1500-1600. However, the condition of the object leaves other possibilities open, including a later …

Description: Gilded silver object with niello inlay and Salin's Style I decoration dating it to the early Anglo-Saxon period. It is a heavy, three-dimensional object cast in one piece, perhaps imitating a buckle frame and pin, or alternatively a sword-ring. The object is largely circular in shape, thick and tapering upwards to form a truncated cone which has a sunken centre devoid of decoration. This is crossed by a bar which drapes across the slopes of the cone, dipping down into the centre where it is crossed by a second shorter bar at right angles. The sides of the cone ar…

A twisted strip of silver, the remaining fragment of an unknown artefact type. This fragment weighs 0.99g and has a length of 25.0mm. The strip has a square cross-section measuring 2.5mm x 2.5mm. The act of twisting the strip has created a decorative barley-twist effect due to the spiralling corners of the square shaft. The strip is curved, the bend almost but not consistently curved along the length, which reduces the curved bend (length between the two ends of the fragment) to 22.3mm. The arc of the bend has a maximum depth of 6.6mm. It is not certain whether this bend is part of th…

Silver unidentified object. A small triangular object comprising a plain back-plate of thickness 0.4mm and a stamped front, the latter bearing rounded bosses as follow: two rows of five; separated by a horizontal bar from one row of three bosses; below two bosses, which are below an inverted crescent. The display face appears to be gilded over the thin silver sheet of which it is made. The back-plate is peeled away at the apex of the triangular form. The combination of composite construction and silver gilt may point to the early post-medieval period. Given this dating and the suspect…

Silver unidentified object. A small, probably cast, flat-sided annular object, resembling a cog with a series of twelve rounded 'teeth' interrupted by a short [3mm] straight bar. This might have been taken to indicate the loss of another tooth or two were the central aperture not also slightly expanded towards the bar, which is its only departure from an otherwise circular form. The finder kindly reports that his own tests [of an unspecified nature] suggest the object to be silver gilt. The fine modelling might point to a mechanical function, but the gilding carries across the 'teeth'…

Treasure reference 2018 T364: a small fragment of a silver object of unknown function. The object is flat and has been cut on all sides and now takes on a sub-rectangular shape. The surface is worn and scratched on both sides. An oval shaped indentation is visible off-centre on one side, which has pushed the metal into a convex oval on one side. The object has no dating evidence itself, but is from a known Early-Medieval productive site and is probably evidence for silverworking of that date. In light of the context of the site the object is probably Early Medieval, circa 800-900.
