An incomplete silver seal matrix. A pointed oval seal matrix with an empty central, oval recess which may have contained a glass or gemstone intaglio (now missing). There is a raised rim around the central recess which has traces of a white material in it, possibly a paste to secure the missing intaglio. The seal is inscribed with recessed and reversed Lombardic lettering reading +IOhANNIS DE DEVEREL anti-clockwise. An incomplete silver fob seal matrix. The die only of a seal matrix with a separately applied handle, now missing. The die is an irregular octagon. Around the edge is a framing band of punched rectangular indentations. Inside this is a deeply incised design of a stag lying on a grassy tussock, facing right. On the rear of the dies are traces of solder where the handle was formerly attached. A Post Medieval cast silver seal matrix with engraved oval die, dating from c.AD 1600 - 1700. The base of the handle is octagonal in section until it reaches a raised collar towards the top of the handle. From the collar upwards, the handle is circular in section. Towards the top is a second wider raised collar. The suspension loop at the top is bulbous and has a circular perforation for attachment. A complete silver seal matrix. The matrix has a trefoil openwork handle with a hexagonally faceted conical stem at the back of the die. An oval seal matrix with a trefoil handle. The handle is openwork with three inverted drop-shaped apertures (one at the top with two below). At the top of the upper foil is a small knop and there are slight knops on its shoulders and on the outer shoulders of the lower foils. The lower foils end in scrolls at the sides. A silver seal matrix dating to the late 18th century, c.1775 AD. The handle of the matrix is hollow, oval and conical with a large suspension loop at the top. The loop is flat with an octagonal outer edge and a circular hole. The conical handle is decorated with concentric bands and has a longitudinal seam at one side. At the base the edge of the handle is flared out and roughly shaped into an oval. There is a hall mark at one side (the same side as the seam)comprising a left facing bust, a lion and the letter A. A small oval cast silver seal matrix with inset central cornelian intaglio. The intaglio is a reused Roman gem and the figure depicted is probably satyr of a type found incorporated into another medieval seal matrix, from North Walsham, Norfolk (pers. comm. Martin Henig). In both examples the satyr is walking to the right, of classicising style, and is datable to the end of the first century AD (Henig and Heslop 1986, 306).
