Possibly the silver frame of a late 18th century seal matrix or 'fob seal'. The frame is very fragile-looking, with half of it broken off (breaks visible on the reverse). The frame was made from silver wire with a clear front and back. It appears that half of it is missing, with all four strands being held together by the 'silver binding' at the top. The bottom loops would have been soldered or attached to the fob seal or swivel seal matrix.

An incomplete post-medieval silver seal matrix, broken on the handle in antiquity, just above the die. The die is octagonal and shows the incuse design of a galleon with three masts and front and rear castles, with waves below. This is surrounded by a beaded border. On its upper surface the die has a maker's mark 'B / ?B' (the second letter has not been fully stamped), one letter either side of the vestigial handle.

Cast silver seal of late Georgian date (1725-1800). The seal is formed with a oval seal face which extends in a graceful tapering stem terminating in a expanded plate with two projecting studs which would have fitted into an organic, wood or bone / ivory, handle. The face of the matrix is engraved with a stylised N with ornate floral curvi-linear scrolls embellishing it. The design is well cut and detailed. As this artefact is not more than 300 years old it does not qualify as treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act. Thanks are extended to Dora Thornton, British Museum, for her commen…
