By Ciorstaidh Hayward-Trevarthern and Ian Richardson A silver vervel or hawking ring. A circular band with a flat external surface and concave internal surface. The exterior is inscribed "Stratton . in . Hampshrie*" (Note: Hampshire appears mis-spelled). Used in falconry, vervels were attached to the leather jesses around the bird's feet and served as a point of attachment for the leash and as a means of identifying the owner of the bird. They appear to often have been worn in pairs, where each vervel contained some of the necessary information for identification. It is presumed that…

Part of a silver object. The fragment is roughly rectangular at each edge is an old break. It measures 12.7 by 7.2mm and is 0.6mm thick. One face is decorated with an engraved cross, similar to a cross potent but with additional bars across the terminals, and one arm longer than the other three. To the left of the engraved cross is a letter 'M' with serif ends. The form of the engraving would suggest a medieval date, probably 13th or 14th century, but there is not enough left of the artefact to identify what it may have been originally. Consequently, in terms of age and as the…

A post medieval to modern silver fragment. The fragment is rectangular in shape with four, irregularly spaced, drilled holes, two of which appear to contain rust. These holes were possibly used to mount the fragment onto another object. One side is undecorated, whereas the other appears to have lettering stamped diagonally across it. An O, K and V can be seen but it appears that the fragment has been cut from a larger object thus removing the full inscription. Length 17 mm, width 5.1 mm, thickness 0.7 mm and weight 0.45 g. Whilst the item does appear to be composed of more than 10% p…
