It is a tapering D section metal bar, with, at the wider upper end is an oval plate which includes, in relief, a laureate, draped Classical imperial bust, facing, The features are very detailed, but rather crudely executed. The field in the background has a pitted decoration. Below this, the bar tapers as an elegant concave curve, without any decoration, to a ball foot, surmounted by a semi-circumferential rectangular collar. The collar is decorated with an acanthus-like decoration in relief. On the ball is a maker's mark stamped with a simple incuse shield, and letters H P. At the wider, upper end is an extension from the top rear of the plate and to which has been applied a drop shape attachment feature, a flat slide, narrow at its top end, widening to a pointed oval, lying behind and slightly angled towards, the upper part of the bar.

Dr. Rachel King, European Renaissance and Waddesdon Bequest, Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory, British Museum, notes that, 'I agree that it does have a clip form, and the lack on markings or rivet holes in the metal tongue portion could mean that it was against or within textile, which would tally with a scabbard or sheath'. 'The imperial portrait suggests 18th century to me, as neo-classical interest. The face-on orientation of the head with barely any inclination of the head is unusual, as we usually see profile ‘portraits’. 'Based on the maker's mark, the date is likely post 1739'. The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change. This practice was prohibited by the English authorities. Soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.2929148615014WILTSSWM 62412024-02-20T13:00:16Z2024-02-28T16:21:03Z0.29PAS65D4A260001D2212.41221421439251692343925WiltshireWiltshireChilmarkST963351.09629235-2.05849897bands.shops.handy10WILT-4A3973538141317022Doge, as standard bearer of Venice, kneeling left, receiving the banner of St. Mark from the patron-saint standing right.AV. Approximately a quarter of the outer rim of the coin is missing, broken along the lineof the inner circle.
obverse: B G VICECOM[ITES]; 'Visconti snake' (biscia) eating 'Saracen'.
reverse: MEDIOLANVM depicting a cross.
The coin appears to have been pierced, once directly through the centre, with a second, smaller hole just below. Medieval coins of Milan are unusual finds in Britain, this being one of five recorded by the PAS to date (Feb 2024).
Day et al (2016, 449) describe the design of a coiled snake eating a person as probably harking back to an older military banner although the iconography of the snake eating a 'pagan Saracen' originated in the First Crusade.29291355137814WILTSSWM 63462024-02-05T15:30:45Z2024-03-01T10:14:37Z0.76PAS65C0FF2500108A17.3122122141427439251719243925WiltshireWiltshireLuckingtonST838451.55462587-2.24659207bands.shops.handy10WILT-10095C23871173448853'Visconti snake' (biscia) eating 'Saracen'B G VICECOM[ ... ]Cross[ ... ] IOLANVM12denaroItalian StatesSilver11728Struck or hammeredIncompleteMEDIEVALx14221MEDIEVALx14221x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderWILT-0FF251_65c1012fcb6ca.jpg1261484images/alysontanner/Italian states (excluding Venice): silver coinSouth WestCertain12024-03-01T10:14:37.963Zfinds-11483641148364SUR-B88933COINROMANA worn silver Roman siliqua of Julian dating to AD 360-363 (Reece Period 18).
