Small silver shield-shaped flat mount with two holes, probably for separate rivets, one in the centre near the top and the other near the base. There are two incurved scallops on the top edge, with a point in the centre, and the front face is decorated along all three edges with a row of hand-punched dots. Weight 0.21g. Height 10mm. Width 9mm. Thickness 0.5mm.  Despite the handmade decoration, shields of this shape (with a double incurve to the top) are only found in the post-medieval period, most commonly from the 18th century onwards, and so this mount is likely to be 18th…

Description: Fragment of a small gilded silver flat openwork mount, probably Roman in date, perhaps a rectangular fitting for belt or strap. It is sharply rectangular in cross-section, with parallel, straight sides and both ends broken. Two triangular apertures are present, along with one crescentic, and part of another. The reserved bars have a scrolly appearance, ending in roundels. No means of attachment has survived. One break is recent but the other is not, being covered in a ferrous deposit that has afflicted many metal objects on this site. Patches …

Description: Unusual partly gilded silver and niello-inlaid mount of early-medieval date, perhaps broken and repaired. It is rectangular, thick and hollowed on the reverse, and decorated in Carolingian-style relief with openwork elements. The decoration is based around a bold raised flat-topped diagonal cross or saltire dividing the square into quarters, with  a worn boss in the centre and at the end of each arm. At the end of each arm of the saltire is a low-relief leaf motif, with a sunken, lobed centre and an outcurved leaf to either side which is inlaid with a niell…

Description: Partly distorted medieval repoussé sheet silver mount. It is circular, and the now-bent edge is decorated with twelve small bosses. Through the centre is a dome-headed copper alloy tack, set within a hole through the slightly domed centre; the edges of the hole are bent back along the shaft of the tack, which is square in cross-section, tapers to a point, and is bent flat against the reverse of the mount. The reverse shows the hollow bosses and centre of the sheet element. Dimensions: The mount is c.11.5mm in diameter, the head of the tack 7mm in diameter; the shaft…

Description: A fragment of a gilded silver object, originally circular, with a groove within a hollow-backed ridge around the original curving edge, probably to add strength. The fragment is roughly triangular, with the apex missing. The front is gilded, and decorated with a panel edged with grooves and filled with incised cross-hatching. The panel flares slightly from the broken-off centre to the edge, and the cross-hatching disappears at the groove around the curving edge. This edge is relatively rough. The other two main edges look broken (worn breaks). …

Description: Fragment of a medieval gilded silver object, probably a mount, with very neat engraved decoration on one face. The fragment is approximately rectangular, although nearly all the edges are broken. It is now bent but appears to have originally been flat or slightly convex about the long axis.  The decoration comprises a standing human figure made up from engraved lines around reserved areas against a carved-out or keyed recessed background. The figure is standing facing the viewer, with the head turned slightly to the viewer's left (the figure's right). It…

Very small silvered copper alloy mount dating from the medieval or post-medieval period or, if (possibly) solid silver, dating from the later 18th/early 19th century and thus not potential Treasure. Date 15th-19th century. The small fragment only displays moulded foliate decoration and it is uncertain what it was originally part of. NB: This is a rally find that was not seen by the FLO in person. Images and findspot information were kindly provided by the rally organiser.

Silver grosso of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Rome, 1492-1503, adapted by the cutting out of a disc from the centre of the coin. The reason for this is uncertain; annular brooches are known which have been similarly treated but they are generally over two centuries earlier in date and have a hole drilled in the perimeter to accommodate a pin. The fashion for making annular brooches out of coins seems to have died out long before the last decade of the 15th century when this grosso was struck. It is probable that another function was intended for this large silver washer but wha…

Mount or inlay. Fragment of flat-sectioned silver strip, parallel sided, broken at one end, the other end an angled concave edge with the corners broken. The upper face decorated with a flower and leaves on a field keyed for niello, much of which survives. There is a narrow, plain border around the edge without niello. On the reverse are discoloured patches probably the result of solder, with no other visible means of attachment. Surviving dimensions 21 x 12 x 1mm. Weight 1.1g.
