The finger ring comprises a circular hoop with sides which expand smoothly to a rectangular bezel. The hoop is D-shaped in section, the bezel has a thin rectangular section.
The bezel is incised with the initials FWD. The W is slightly smaller than the other letters and overlays the back of the D. The letters are capitalised and formed of parallel irregularly spaced lines. The initials are framed by an incised rectangular border though the lines do not meet at the corners. Three central parallel lines extend into the bezel above and below the initials. The outer edge of either side of the frame has faint crosshatched decoration.
The shoulders feature incised designs. A sunburst is set upon the flat side of a triangle filled with crosshatching. Below this are two sets of two transverse grooves with a central vertical groove. Three smaller radiating grooves are present between the vertical and transverse grooves to either side. The rest of the exterior of the hoop is undecorated.
The interior of the hoop displays rectangular recessed areas bearing partial lettering. Extending from one corner of the bezel reverse are the partial letters possibly reading BEF(crown image)[---]. The opposite corner display text which is largely illegible [-------]M/W. Another corner displays an R and the final appears blank. The positioning of the lettering, right at the edge of the ring suggests they would not serve as makers or verification marks. They may be lettering left over from reused other objects such as coins. Rings formed of reused coins, in which the silver coin is folded and turned, are not uncommon and are sometimes associated with trench art and Prisoner of War camps.
The metal has a shiny grey patina and is won. The finger ring is 22.9mm in diameter, 7.6mm wide, 1.3mm thick and weighs 3g.
Rachel King, British Museum Curator of European Renaissance suggests that this ring is 19th or 20th century in date, though pre-1950. As such the object falls outside the definition of Treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act and is therefore Not Treasure.4141180019504YORYM2023-11-04T00:00:00ZYMT : E074062024-02-14T15:50:06Z2024-02-26T13:36:52Z3PAS65CCE12E001A4922.91.37.61221414143025635428525635East Riding of YorkshireEast Riding of YorkshireHessleTA012553.71165743-0.47120496bands.shops.handy10YORYM-CE1A27Silver11728CompleteMODERNMODERNMetal detectorReturned to finderYORYM-CE12EA_65dc93c12148f.jpg1264918images/bmorris/Yorkshire and the HumberCertain12024-02-26T13:36:52.142Zfinds-11507341150734YORYM-C99BF9THIMBLEMODERNAn incomplete machine-made silver thimble of modern date, c.AD 1850 – 1950.
The thimble is flattened and folded with the dome lost to old worn breaks. The upper half of the thimble is decorated with regular tessellating hexagonal pits. The lower half displays foliate decoration formed of stippling and machine pressed grooves. The rim is folded over.
The metal has a dark grey patina and is in fair condition. The object is 22.6mm long, 14.9mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 3.1g.
Similar thimbles are recorded as CORN-7BCCC5, WMID-E4D322, BERK-902AD5, SUSS-D4CC00 and YORYM-800494. CORN-7BCCC5 states that Read (1988) illustrates silver thimbles with similar decoration on page 192, Nos.1361-1362, which are dated from the 19th century. Bailey (1993) illustrates a similar example on page 14, No.36 which is dated from the Victorian period.
Machine-made thimbles are less than 300 years old and therefore do not come over the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act and, although the object has a silver content of over 90%, it is therefore not considered to be Treasure.4141185019504YORYMYMT : E073312024-02-14T10:45:19Z2024-02-20T21:41:06Z3.1PAS65CC99BF0019864.914.922.6122121614143025635438125635East Riding of YorkshireEast Riding of YorkshireWeltonSE962753.73057013-0.54631395bands.shops.handy10YORYM-C99E5BSilver11728MilledIncompleteMODERNMODERNMetal detectorReturned to finderYORYM-C99BF9_65d51c355a4a7.jpg1264305images/bmorris/Yorkshire and the HumberCertain12024-02-20T21:41:06.424Zfinds-11497181149718YORYM-4F4B06COINMEDIEVALA silver Medieval cut halfpenny of Henry I (AD 1100-1350) dating to the period AD 1125-c.1135.
