An Early Medieval (c. AD 822-840) silver denier of Carolingian Francia, issued by Louis the Pious. [XPISTIANO REL]IGIO reverse type. Only a small fragment of the coin remains, roughly a quarter which appears to have been intentionally cut. On the remaining reverse the corner of a church design can be seen. Mint uncertain. A more complete example can be found at LIN-F6C6E1. Discussion Coins of this type are unusual finds in the British Isles. Only three other deniers of Louis the Pious are recorded on the PAS database.
