Description: Silver bodkin or head-dress pin, almost complete but now sharply bent and broken into two (joining) pieces. At the top is an oval scoop 7.8mm wide, set above a narrowed waist. Below this, the bodkin is rectangular in cross-section and tapers in both width and thickness. Post-Medieval silver bodkin (incomplete). The bodkin is rectangular in cross section and tapers to a point at one terminal. The other terminal is missing, broken off at a point in the shaft which appears to be an aperture. Below the break, on either of the two wider faces, the shaft is decorated with an engraved eight-petalled flower with transverse bars above and below. At one terminal it is rectangular in cross section being 4.3mm wide and 1.9mm thick. Just below the edge it is pierced by a large oval hole (6.2mm long and 1.1mm wide). Fragment of a silver bodkin with a cross-shaped terminal and a bent, rounded scoop at the upper arm. Oblique notches form very short horizontal arms and a perforated rounded lower arm. The shank is rectangular, with five vertical and two horizontal engraved lines on both faces. The break runs across a longitudinal rectangular perforation. A similar example can be seen in Margeson (1993), pp. 8–9, plates I and II and fig. 4, no. 21.

This head-dress pin is of a type described as a ‘bodkin’. It has a flattened section with a rectangular eye. On both sides there is a serrated leaf motif below the eye, with on one side the inscribed letters M. C. and on the other a single inscribed F. It is broken through the eye and the terminal is missing. The pin has a more sinuous form than is commonly seen. It is a relatively plain example of its type.
