A very worn and corroded 4th-century copper-alloy Roman nummus of Valens, 'SECVRITAS REI PVBLICAE', Rome mint (367-375 AD; Reece issue period 19; LRBC 725). This coin has been pierced at a later date possibly for re-use as an item of jewellery. The piercing is at around 9 o'clock on the obverse and around 9 o'clock on the reverse. Although this practice is associated with the early-medieval period, a Roman date for this piercing ought not to be ruled out.
