Small square-sectioned green glass phial or possibly an inkwell of post medieval date, probably c. 18th to 19th century
The inkwell is near complete, with a damaged neck, which has probably broken just below the rim at the highest surviving point of the neck (with a maximum surviving height of 34.0mm and a weight of 19.7g). The neck is circular (with a diameter of 13.8mm and an internal diameter of 19.6mm), flaring towards the missing rim. The body of the vessel is sub-square (29mm x 30mm and with a height of 23mm). Each face is slightly dished at the centre. The underside of the…

Blue glass bead, of uncertain date, possibly Roman, c. mid 1st century AD to late 4th century
The bead is of elongated-spherical form, wider at one end (with a length of 9.0mm and a weight of 1.1g, containing some sediment) and is pale-blue in colour. The faces are convex (giving a maximum diameter of 9.8mm) and the bead has a single, circular perforation, seemingly of uniform diameter (3.4mm diameter). There is a very slight difference in the length and diameter of the bead from one side to the other (7.8mm -9.0mm). The face is somewhat abraded and has slight pitting with encirc…

Glass bead, probably of Roman date, c. mid 1st century AD to late 4th century
The bead is of plain annular type and is incomplete, represented by one half (with a diameter of 12.8mm, a thickness of 7.9mm and a weight of 1.2g). The central perforation is circular and parallel sided (with a diameter of 3.6mm). The glass is natural translucent pale green. The surface is abraded and imperfections are evident. The surface along the break is unabraded and suggests a relatively recent break.
Crummy (1983, p32) dates plain annular beads excavated at Colchester from the mid 1st to the l…

Roman glass vessel neck fragment, probably of late 1st or 2nd century AD date
The vessel is incomplete and is represented by the neck only with a surviving height of 18.30mm. The rim is irregular and damaged; it curves outward to produce a rim diameter of 26.82mm. The neck is short (10.5mm) with a diameter of 17.91mm. The shoulder of the vessel is at a near-right angle to the neck. The rim and neck form would suggest a bottle. The glass is blue green and translucent, but not clear. The vessel neck weighs 6.2g.

Glass intaglio in copper alloy setting, probably part of a fob-seal. Oval, clear glass intaglio of a male bust, with beard, classical helmet and part of a shield, facing left. The surface is abraded but otherwise complete. The copper alloy (probably bronze) setting is also oval and incomplete, the conical handle and suspension loop are missing. No trace of gilding remains. Diameter 21mm - 18mm. The wearing of fob-seals became popular from the late eighteenth century onwards. They were worn conspicuously on a ribbon or a split-ring hanging from the fob-pocket. Copper alloy fob-seals wer…
