An complete worked flint hand tool of Palaeolithic date (c.500,000-10,000BC) Description: The object is broadly rectangular in plan and trapezoid in cross section with a slight curve. It has been produced from a tertiary flake of dark grey flint; there are tan brown patches and areas of white flecks on the dorsal face and white patination covering the ventral face. The dorsal face has areas of short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on both mesal and a striking platform at the proximal end; the ventral side has a slightly concave curve and…

A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe likely to date to around 600,000 BC. Sub-cordate shape (Wymer (1999) Type E/D) with retouch mainly confined to the edges of both faces. There is a large patch of pebble cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The edges and surfaces are heavily abraded.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 121.53mm, width: 91.76mm, thickness: 29.11mm, weight: 340g

A large worked flint flake, 90.3mm in length, struck from an orange brown flint and of potential Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic (c 500,000-180,000 BC) date. There is a prominent bulb of percussion and striking platform at the proximal end. The dorsal surface has removal scars; the ventral surface is unworked. The flake is heavily rolled and water worn. Any retouch is now unclear due to battering damage around the edges.

A bifacially worked flint implement made on an irregular nodule of opaque mottled orangey brown flint. Areas of worn chalky cortex remain on both faces and part of one margin. The remainder of the surface comprises irregular, sometimes deep flake scars, many of which have hinge terminations. Neither the butt nor the tip are well formed and one margin appears truncated by very steep opportunistic flaking. The object may be an abandoned hand-axe blank or roughout which has failed because of large flaws within the stone. The steep truncated margin may indicate subsequent salvagi…

A struck and worked flake of probable Palaeolithic date. It is a worked naturally-occurring flake, with a thick profile, no evidence of a bulb of percussion, but clear retouch down one edge. Water worn with small areas of post-depositional shattering and damage, but the retouch is clearly discernible.  Width (max): 22 Thickness (at proximal end): 10.5mm Thickness (at distal): 5.2mm

A complete flint object, possibly a scraper tool dating to the lower Palaeolithic period (c.500,000-60,000 BC). The object is broadly oval in shape with a slight curve towards the end. The dorsal face shows evidence of working particularly around the prominent curved edge. Concoidal ripple marks radiate from the worked edge. However, the overall form is natural and shows no signs of preparation prior to working. The surface is largely covered by a smooth bright orange cortex. The ventral face remains covered in a thick, rough cortex. A prominent bulb of percussion is present at t…

Elongated and retouched tertiary flake in rolled condition with surface loss to the high points of the flake scars and all edges: - of orange patinated flint with only minimal recent damage, this area shows the original colour of the flint to have been light grey. The retouch to the edges is bifacial, with one edge that is more extensively worked than the other to regularise the shape to a lenticular cross section. Each end appears to be retouched to the dorsal face to round off the ends, removing the bulb of percussion and the distal end in the process. A very unusual implement,…

Palaeolithic flint implement: multiple tool. Made on a very large tertiary blade, very light cream opaque patina. No platform present although there is a break. Not blade technology. Opposing orthogonal dorsal scars have created a central ridge. Both lateral edges have long, scaler retouch to create a scraping edge on the right and a denticulated edge on the left. On the right the retouch is all inverse, semi-abrupt and low-angle, and on the left the retouch is alternating, abrupt and low-angle, Either Middle or Upper Palaeolithic but cannot be dated with certainty.

Palaeolithic chert implement: multiple tool. Made on a broken flake, with some re-cortication and opaque patination. Chert is light mottled browns and greys with some iron-staining. Denticulations along both lateral edges. The distal end has an awl fashioned by notching on either side. The ventral face has been flaked. Piece appears to be Middle Palaeolithic but Neolithic cannot be ruled out.

Middle Palaeolithic flint implement: limace. Made on chalky flint, light grey opaque patina. Abrupt flaking and retouch around the entire piece to create a double-pointed limace. One point of note is that this limace is bi-facial, thus differing from Bordes' classification.

Lower to Middle Palaeolithic flint implement: notch. A rolled gravel flake, patinated mid- and light brown opaque. Notch created by denticulated retouch. A good example of a small flaked tool of probably Palaeolithic date. Some retouch is present near the notch and these areas are patinated in the lighter brown, suggesting the flake is far older and was collected in the gravels, It is not possible tp accurately date the notch but the flake is Middle Palaeolithic at the latest.

Triangular shaped flake point implement, made from a light grey flint. The flake tool has a distinct bulb of percussion on the ventral face. There is also small-scale semi-abrupt retouch along the proximal left edge (viewed ventrally). The flake curves slightly, so that the ventral face is concave. The dorsal face features three prominent flake scars. Two of which are found along either edge, and the third and more recent removal is triangular in shape and ends in a point which joins the central arris. Removals of this type are typically associated with levallois, or 'prepared core…
