A Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe of chordate form (Wymer Type J), struck from a pale brown flint which is heavily patinated with a thick white patina from prolonged secondary deposition in calcareous sediments. The axe measures 92.6mm long by 74.6mm wide and 38.4mm thick and is bifacially worked with invasive soft hammer flaking covering both faces. A complete flint object, possibly a scraper tool dating to the lower Palaeolithic period (c.500,000-60,000 BC).
The object is broadly oval in shape with a slight curve towards the end. The dorsal face shows evidence of working particularly around the prominent curved edge. Concoidal ripple marks radiate from the worked edge. However, the overall form is natural and shows no signs of preparation prior to working. The surface is largely covered by a smooth bright orange cortex. The ventral face remains covered in a thick, rough cortex. A prominent bulb of percussion is present at t…

A Middle Palaeolithic Coygan ('Bout Coupe') handaxe. Cream/beige flint or chert. Sub-rectangular with a straight base, and narrows to a rounded tip (now incomplete). All edges have shattered damage. One face has a flat profile formed by three horizontal removal scars, the left-most with a further removal flake at 45 degrees to the edge. The other face has a raised profile with invasive, stepped or scaled, low angle retouch. An area of cortex remains at the base.
Palaeolithic handaxes are common finds from Hampshire, but more typically of Lower Palaeolithic date and from the sout…

A Lower Palaeolithic sub-cordate handaxe. Bifacially worked with areas of cortex remaining on both surfaces. The 'ventral' face has invasive removal scars to the right and left of the pointed apex, and natural fracture lines at the butt. The 'dorsal' has invasive stepped removals along both sides, and a large natural fracture with loss of surface area at the butt, corresponding to the fracture line on the other face. Water worn. Orange/beige chert with small patches of recortication.
