Roman plate brooch: copper alloy umbonate brooch. A cast copper alloy umbonate (domed) brooch of probable second century AD date. The edge of the brooch is undecorated, but the face is ornamented with enamelled cells. In the centre of the dome (umbo) there is a small circular raised central boss, surmounting a six-pointed star, itself raised above the surface of the brooch. A riased circumferential rim runs around the brooch margin, and traces of gilt remain here. The reverse of the brooch is concave. Several similar examples feature in Hattatt's 'Visual Catalogue'.

Late Iron Age /Roman brooch: the bow from a Colchester fibula brooch, retaining a short section of crossbar, and the pin for securing the spring chord. The spring itself, pin and catchplate are now lost. The entire object has been straightened out and flattened (perhaps due to post-depositional deformation under the plough). It has a brown patina, typical of brooches of this date.
