Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published
Lozenge-shaped strip brooch made from gilded silver. It has 8th-century Mercian-style chip-carved decoration showing a central profile animal within a spiral and enmeshed in interlace. It is perforated at one end, and this led to an original identification as a book mount. Since then, several brooches of Weetch's type 31.C have been found with rivets or perforations at one end to allow the attachment of a separate pin or catch (e.g. SUR-47F8A7, PUBLIC-C5F154, CAM-A4DEEE, BUC-4D849D) and this seems the most likely identification in this case. Compare HAMP-CEBED7, which has a very simil…

Cast silver fragment with incised and stamped decoration, not seen by KL and described from the drawing done by ME. The fragment is truncated at both ends, its central section has a flattened, triangular section on which are a number of incomprehensible incised lines. Either side of this, the section narrows and becomes flat, with a central groove. These areas of the object bear rows of what look like diamond shaped stamp impressions between which are incised lines. The decoration is described as 'floral'. The object probably represents the remains of a late Medieval iconograph…
