Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Medieval cast copper alloy scabbard chape. The chape is triangular in plan with a slightly domed surface and a rounded terminal. The surface of the chape is plain except for the top edge, which is fluted, extending approximately 10mm down the length of the chape. This fluting is visible on both surfaces of the chape. The edges of the two longer sides have been folded backwards to hold and reinforce the sheath. The chape has an even mid-green patina. It is approximately 55mm long and 22mm wide.

Post Medieval cast copper alloy sword belt hanger. The hanger has a hooked terminal with a globular projection to either side. The hook has a spherical terminal. The other end has a trefoil terminal, the central lobe contains a circular rivet hole, with a further rivet hole towards the hooked end (possibly containing the remains of the iron rivets - this is unclear from the photograph). The upper surface is decorated with an incised foliate design. It has an even green patina and the surface appears slightly worn. The hanger is approximately 20mm wide and 50mm long.

Hinge of a balance. At the top is a broken loop, possibly a suspension loop. The item appears to have an arm which swing out from within a casing. A second arm may swing out from the casing but it is unclear how the hinge would work. The is iron corrosion either side of the hinge, suggesting an iron axis pin. The arm and casing is incomplete.
