Cast triangular plate with a triple collar moulded on one side only separating it from a further extent, either a shank or, more likely, a narrow part of a blade. The form initially encouraged the recorders to offer an identification as a spatulate stylus eraser or terminal, but the turned appearance of the edge of the blade may suggest it to be from tweezers. Or, the eraser of a stylus was employed so vigorously as to bend the edge of the eraser and also break its shaft – this would be difficult, try it at home! Suggested date: Early Medi…

A length of copper alloy decorated with punched crescents. It is probably one arm from a set of tweezers, of Roman to Medieval date, AD 43 - 1500, but perhaps more likely to be Roman or Early Medieval. The object is a flat rectangular piece of metal, bent at one end into a U shape. The other arm is missing. The other end tapers to a rounded point - this is probably damage. The front face is decorated with two rows of stamped crescents. The object is 39.1mm long, 5.6mm wide, 3.0mm thick and weighs 1.46g. There appears to be evidence of moulded decoration along the length of the object. There are three thicker sections or ridges/collars with narrowed areas between.

Distorted medieval sheet copper alloy cosmetic set in a very peculiar arrangement and without a pair of tweezers. A flat earscoop, similar to Egan and Pritchard 1991 no. 1756, has been reused or converted as the base on the two ends of which two other implements swivel and are held by a rivet. The end of another rivet is fixed at the mid point of the base but is without any apparent function. An identical earscoop is attached to the proximal end and the two are separated by a triangular washer. This functioning earscoop has the same arrangement of thr…

One bent arm from a pair of probably medieval sheet copper alloy tweezers, parallel-sided arm, wavy rocker-arm engraving on the face, and a very slightly pronounced broken loop. The arms turn gently inwards above the blades. This is most likely to be of the 13th or 14th-century though there remains a possibility that it is Roman (Biddle 1990, 690-2, especially f.n.1). Length (unbent) 55mm. Width 5.5mm. Weight 2.22g.

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A pair of Iron Age tweezers. It appears to be complete except for some loss of edge and pitted loss of surface around the tips of the arms and the connecting loop. It is formed of a single strip of metal folded in half, perhaps around a rod, to create a closed circular loop. The loop has then been hammered flat on a plane perpendicular to that of the arms. The arms are parallel-sided and the tips appear to be rounded. The original shape of the tips is partially obscured by abrasion and loss of edge and surface. However, parts of the side edges at the tips appear to …

A complete, copper alloy, Early Medieval, set of tweezers, AD.450-650. The object comprises both complete arms of a set of tweezers, they taper down from the sharp fold to a rounded point at the distal end. The middle third of both arms is decorated with the same repeated decoration. At the top of the decoration there are two shallow notches in the sides of the arm, then an incised double line, a 3mm gap, then another double incised line creating a thick collar. Below this is a faceted lozenge 5.6mm long, then a double collar before a smaller faceted lozenge 4.3mm long. This is mirror…

Copper alloy sheet tweezers that have been folded in two. The fold has been bent into an penannular loop, from this point the gap between each blade gently widens to the tips, which have bent inwards to meet and form the pincer. The loop is decorated with a series of transverse groves at each end followed by a double saltire at the top of each blade. A very similar artefact was found in excavations in Colchester (see N. Crummy; 1983; pp. 59; no. 1883).

Copper alloy possible strap fitting. Cast symmetrical strip, expanded at either end and neatly folded so the broadened ends lie back to back. Six ring and dot of diameter 2.1mm appear on either side, with five dots arranged like a ‘five’ on a die, and with a further single ring and dot below. The lower pair of rings on the ‘five’ are carried through as perforations or attachment points. As now configured, the object would be apt to the suspension of an object from a light strap. A reddish tint to the metal is a feature often associated with Anglo-Scandinavian material. An alte…

An incomplete Medieval copper alloy tweezers with three adjustable slides on the shaft, similar to those found on page-holders (eg. SUR-08E177) and which would have served to lock the tweezers in place. The tweezers are 67.5mm with narrow spatulate blades with rounded terminals, only one of which remains. The arms are narrow with a terminal loop and have rocker arm style zig-zag decoration extending along both sides and along the centre of the outside face of the remaining blade. c. 12th to 15th century.

Copper alloy tweezers. A narrow straight-sided strip, bent twice at its midpoint to form a loop, and with its slightly broader nips or terminals in-turned towards each other. The metal retains some tensile strength, while the good condition overall may also hint at the recent disturbance of this object from a hitherto sealed context. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

Copper alloy possible tweezers fragment. A triangular plate at the end of a narrow [4.5mm] projecting stalk. There is the ghost of indeterminate border decoration on one side. Against the proposed identification, the edge of the plate is not turned or crimped as might be expected with the nip of a functional pair of tweezers, while it is too flimsy to have served as an eraser on a stylus.
