One half on a pair of cast copper-alloy tweezers dating to the Early-Medieval period (c.AD.410-900).  Only arm arm survives due to a break at the apex of the tweezers hinge. The surviving plate is formed of a single piece of metal that is sub-triangular shaped in plan and rectangular in cross-section. At its large terminal it is 14.4mm wide. This region has been bent at c.85 degrees to form one half of the blade of the object. From this point it narrows in a smooth concave arch to 3.2mm wide at which point it begins to fold over again before ending in a worn transv…

Parts of three pairs of Middle Saxon copper alloy tweezers, one incomplete and two fragments, early 8th - mid 9th century: - very badly distorted with the greater part of one arm missing (recent break). The extant blade is inturned. At the top of both arms immediately below the loop there are two sets of engraved transverse lines, a set of three separated by a broad groove from a set of four. The D-sectioned loop is 3mm wide, and the width of the straight-sided complete arm increases from 4.3mm to 6.5mm. Estimated length c.70mm. - badly distorted fragment, most of a flat-section…

An incomplete copper-alloy probable pair of tweezers of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The tweezers are comprised of a single rectangular piece of metal folded in half to create two parallel plates with a loop for attachment at the apex. Both plates are rectangular in plan and section. One plate terminates in a worn break. The tweezers appear to be undecorated. The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The tweezers are 48.7mm long, 6.8mm wide, 2mm thick and weighs 3g. Similar examples are illustrated in Crummy (1983), p.59, and are recorded as YORYM-C251F7, SF-F67D4B, YORYM-3D23D1, E…

A complete pair of copper-alloy tweezers of the Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The tweezers are formed from a single rectangular sectioned band of copper-alloy which has been bent in half, creating a sprung loop at one end. It consists of two arms extending from the loop. Both are straight sided and there is decoration in the form of a central incised line which runs the entire length of the external surface within which there is evidence of gilding. The tweezers are a dark green colour. The tweezers are 44.6mm long, 3.5mm wide and weigh 1.83 grams.  A…

Copper alloy tweezers. Cast pair of tweezers, broken at the top loop in a single narrow D-section strip with expanded and curved ends, the two parts remaining united by a thick cast loop with central rib. Bent. The accompanying material is Roman or Medieval in date; the former dating appears apt. Possibly darkened by treatment with oil by the finder. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 54.5mm, Width: 4.7mm, Thickness (arm): 1.6mm, Weight: 3.39gms

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, perhaps most likely to be Medieval, but possibly Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It is a sub-rectangular sheet of copper alloy with a projection from the centre of one long edge. The projection is integral and is also sheet metal and is curved forwards and then back, looking as if it is part of a suspension loop or other sub-circular loop. The plate appears to be complete. It has rounded corners on the long edge from which the projection extends, and then straight short sides and a straight long edge. There is no evidence…

Medieval copper-alloy page holder: a pair of tweezers designed to secure and hold open a number of leaves of parchment. It is formed of a strip of metal, folded into a near-circular loop at one end. Its two arms are narrow and plano-convex in cross-section for the most part. The terminals, however, are flat, wide and paddle-like (sub-trapezoidal with rounded corners and slightly convex edges). The arms expand very gradually in width from the loop to beginning of the terminals. The terminals are also wider at their distal than their proximal end.  The tweezers feature a locking sl…

Incomplete set of copper alloy, probably Roman tweezers. The tweezers consist of a narrow and thin, parallel strip of copper alloy. that has been bent back on itself through a 180-degree expanded loop at one end. There is no decoration visible. The terminal end of one arm is missing from an old break, and the other is end-damaged to one side. The field on which the tweezers were found has produced almost entirely Roman artefacts, so the date probability given is quite high. Circa AD43-409. Dimensions: length 44.5mm, width 3.3mm, thickness 1.1mm, weight 1.9g.

Piece of copper-alloy strip, flat and rectangular in cross-section, decorated on one face with a row of small stamped annulets, c. 1mm in diameter. They are evenly spaced, about 1.5mm apart, and flanked by a shallow border groove down one edge of the strip. At one end, the strip is bent forward and broken; the other end may be original. There is damage to the surface about halfway along, suggesting further front-to back bending has taken place. The strip curves very slightly to one side (so that the grooved border is along the convex curve) but this appears to be an original featu…

An incomplete set of copper-alloy tweezers of probable Early-Medieval date (AD 500-800). The arms are formed from one sheet of rectangular sectioned copper-alloy. One of the arms flares out to a triangular expanded end, the other end terminates in an old transverse break.   Tweezers such as this were in use from the Roman through Medieval periods. The form of the current example are indicative of an earlier rather than later date, possibly of Anglo-Saxon date although a slightly earlier Roman date cannot be ruled out entirely. The metal is a mid-green in colour with a slig…
