An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman chatelaine (toilet set hanger), c. 2nd century AD. The object is 33.5mm long and 44.6mm wide. It has flanking horse heads either side of a narrow projecting arm which terminates in a small round suspension loop; this has broken through wear. The horse heads are simply moulded, with details of ears, eyes, snout, mouth and jawline rendered in the casting and faintly visible. A Roman copper alloy suspension item, probably the top of a chatelaine (toilet or cosmetic set hanger), consisting of a single round open loop with large circular perforation at the top below which is a rectangular block arranged veritacally and divided into three collars by transverse grooves. Below the block it widens slightly with a flat rectangular plate the sides of which are extended downwards in rectangular strips with rounded ends and circular piercings through these rounded ends. An incomplete copper alloy chatelaine of Roman date. The fragment is sub-rectangular with extremely worn edges and a short worn projection extending from the centre of one long edge. The front surface is decorated with a central horizontal bar of wriggle work-style decoration above which is a row of seven triangular cells, four of which retain blue glass enamel with only traces remaining in the other three. The hanger is rectangular with a suspension loop (incomplete) projecting from the upper edge and two perforated lugs projecting from each of the lower corners. The item would probably be worn as a brooch or attached to a belt. The artefact measures 24 mm wide and 20 mm long. Chatelaine : Copper-alloy Chatelaine of probable 2nd Century AD date. The decorative plate is rectangular in shape, with a pattern of 11 triangular insets, all but one of which still contain traces of the red and light blue enamel decoration. The dimensions of the main plate are 38.2mm long by 12.1mm high, and 3.1mm thick. Extending from the top of the main plate is a small oval copper-alloy knob, which was cast with the plate and measures 6.4mm long, by 5.2mm wide and 3.5mm high.
