A pair of complete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy tweezers dating to circa AD 43-1066. The tweezers are sub-rectangular in plan. In section, the arm end is bent out shape at a 90 degree angle to the loop. The loop is circular and contains the remains of a complete wire suspension loop. The suspension loop has two coiled ends to keep it in place. The arms of the tweezers flare outwards and the tip of one arm is folded inwards at 90 degrees.  The form and the inclusion of a slip knot suspension loop suggests an Early Medieval date. …

A complete Roman copper-alloy toilet article ear scoop dating to AD 43-410. It likely functioned as an ear scoop. The piece is now bent and distorted. It is rectangular in plan and circular in section. At the top is a circular suspension loop with circular perforation in the centre. Emerging from the bottom and thicker is the stem which gradually tapers into a flat sub circular bowl. The scoop is undecorated. Leahy and Lewis note that whilst used to scoop out excess ear wax, they may also have been used to extract perfume from bottles (2018: 106). They would have formed a complet…

A pair of copper alloy tweezers probably dating to the post-medieval period, c. 1500 - 1800. The tweezers are made of a sheet of copper alloy which has been folded over to create a loop which is crimped to obtain a sprung effect to make the tweezers operate. The arms of the tweezers are parallel along their entire length and the tips of the tweezers are rounded inward for optimum operation. There are a series of circular shapes with inner serrations along the length of both arms, seven on one arm and eight on the other. The designs contain a central pellet surrounded by six sligh…

A copper-alloy fragment of a probably Roman to Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) pair of tweezers, dating to AD 43-800. It consists of the triangular end of one arm; the wider end has a slighlty inward curved edge while the opposite corner keeps on tapering and breaks after 7.76 mm. Even though the portion of the arm surviving is extremely worn it seems that the original thickness and width at the break might not have been far from the actual ones; that could be a hint for a different identification of the fragment. The wider end of the back face could have been soldered to an unclear…

A fragment of cast copper alloy tweezers of probable Roman date. It is rectangular in shape and section with the outer face decorated with two groups of three transverse grooves with a 3mm gap between the groups. The back is plain. The basic form of tweezers continued from the Roman to the medieval period, but the location of the findspot suggests a probable Roman date, though early medieval cannot be ruled out. Length: 32.7mm, width: 6.2mm, thickness: 1.9mm, weight: 2.0g Similar examples of decorative style can be found on records SF-3BC5E8 & SF-516E23

A fragment of a pair of copper alloy tweezers probably of Roman or early medieval date. Only one arm survives. This is an elongated rectangular shape, rectangular in cross-section, flaring very slightly towards one end, with breaks at either end. Its outer face is decorated with groups of transverse grooves arranged at regular intervals, the group at the upper end possibly with a pair of grooves arranged in a saltire cross in its centre (but this is obscured by corrosion). An incomplete pair of copper alloy tweezers of Roman or later date. Only the lower part of one arm survives. This is a flattened trapezoidal shape, expanding slightly towards the outer end, with a well worn break at the inner end. The edge of the blade is bevelled on both sides. Similar examples have been excavated in Colchester (1988, 59, fig.63, no.1881&2), from a post-Roman pit and a 3rd to 4th century context respectively, reflecting the fact that this simple form continued in use beyond the Roman period. Biddle (1990, 691, fig.190) illustrates a number of similar medieval exam…

A copper-alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) pair of tweezers, dating to AD 500-800. It consists of a sub-rectangular cross-sectioned strip of metal which flares at both ends. It is now misshaped by having been twisted and bent several times. The front face is decorated with a line of ring-and-dot motifs running along the arms of the tweezers and few more on the flared part. These kind of tweezers have been used since the Roman to the Medieval period; the decoration made of ring-and-dot motifs though, suggests an Early Medieval date. An incomplete pair of copper alloy tweezers of probable Roman or later date. Both arms are straight, narrow and rectangular in cross section, folded round to form a circular loop in the middle. The sides of the inner end of each arm are slightly bevelled. The tip of each arm is bent inwards to meet one another. When viewed in profile there is a slight bend at the same point on each arm and this corresponds with a patch of wear/corrosion on the outer face of one arm, suggesting that there may have been a slide present originally. This relatively simple form continued from the Roman …

An incomplete copper-alloy probably Medieval pair of tweezers, dating to AD 1250-1450. It consists of a narrow sheet of metal bent on itself, creating two arms which flare towards the broken ends. There are three sliding copper-alloy collars around the arms, which enabled the locking of the arms. One of the arm is broken right after the third collar. The tweezers are folded on itself; the surfaces are abraded and do not bear any decoration. Cf Biddle (1990, p. 691, fig. 190, no. 2189O).
