A complete copper-alloy post-medieval knife handle terminal. The terminal is shaped like an horse's hoof and has iron corrosion. It curves downwards slightly at an angle and has a flat outer end. The inner surface is covered with iron corrosion where it would have joined the iron tang of a knife originally.
A number of similar example have now been recorded with the PAS: e.g. SF-6B23D0, NLM-61F60B, SUR-1DCA47, IOW-E044C2, SOM-A63564 and LVPL-2ABAE1.
Egan (2005, 93, no.398) illustrates a similar example from a 15th to 16th century excavated context in London.

A cast copper alloy Post Medieval end cap from a scale tang knife dating to the 16th century. The end cap consists of a pair of conjoined (addorsed) horse hooves facing away from each other. The hooves are oval in cross section and separated by a groove. Another groove extends around the base of the cap separating it from a ridged border at the handle of the knife. The base terminal of the end cap has a slot filled with the corroded remnants of a rectangular-sectioned iron blade scale tang.

A Post Medieval cast copper-alloy end cap from a scale tang knife dating c. 1500-1600. The end cap consists of a double (addorsed) horse hoof terminal with the hoofs curving away from each other. Each hoof is sub-oval in cross-section with a short projection on the outer edge. Where the hoofs conversge is a sgort groove. The outer sides curve inwardly to the base. The base has a slot filled with corroded rectangualr-sectioned iron blade.
The surfaces off the end cap has light brown patination.

The terminal has an oval cross section and is curved, with moulded decoration delineating aspects of the hoof and fetlock. The end / underside of the hoof has four small rounded indentations, perhaps indicating horseshoe nails and two small projections at the rear edge perhaps imitating the calkins on a shoe, with a groove between. A fragment from a copper alloy object possibly a Post-Medieval cast knife end-stop (end cap) dating to c.1500-1600 in the form of a shod horse's hoof.
The fragment is from a hollow object moulded into shape with a possible flat base that was likely oval in shape. From this the body would have risen up and then turned at an angle in a smooth curve. Beyond this it is difficult to identify the original form of the item. The shape is similar to that of knife stops on the database such as OXON-702E2D. The object is medium green in colour.

An incomplete copper-alloy knife end-cap of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1450 - 1600. The object is from a scale-tang knife in the form of a horse hoof. It is oval in cross-section and curved in profile. The terminal (foot) is flat with a worn shallow groove running along its length. The outer surface of the object is decorated with transverse grooves which delineate the lower parts of the horses’ hoof and fetlock. The upper end has a deeper groove which retains and irregular piece of iron.

The object is in the form of a horse’s hoof, curved in side profile with a curved grooves along the body of the cap to delineate the horse’s hoof and fetlock and a circumferential groove to depict a horse shoe at the terminal. Part of the tang is retained within the cap.

Copper alloy and iron knife fragment. Cast Y-shaped copper alloy pommel cap from a small meat knife; the design conceit might involve or refer to a pair of shod horse feet as a groove is discernible round the top of one of the branches. Copper alloy and iron knife fragment. Cast pommel from a small scale tanged meat knife, of a lightly waisted horse hoof form with this conceit underlined by seven small drilled pits on the top of the pommel representing the nails securing the shoe; the upper edge of the shoe [as in use] is also represented as a groove round the top of the object. A deeply incised V appears on either side. The stub of the iron scale tang of the knife remains in the lower surface of the pommel. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650
