An incomplete copper alloy ring of uncertain function and date, but probably modern. About half the ring survives with worn breaks at each end. One end has a sub-triangular cross-section with a slightly bevelled convex internal edge. At the other end the cross-section at the break is oval due to wear and damage. There is a casting seam running centrally around the internal surface of the ring. There is no surviving decoration. There is surface damage with pitting across most of the surface but a section of the dark green glossy patina remains on one side. Measurements: length 26…

A warped copper alloy ring with pointed oval cross section and slightly uneven thickness of unknown date. It has a red green colour. The ring in its warped state is 34.4mm long, 14.5mm wide, 2mm thick and weighs 1.85 grams. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper-alloy strap fitting of uncertain date. The object is a horizontally flattened, sub-oval loop shape with one side slightly straighter than the other. It has a pointed oval cross-section. There are areas of greater wear on each longer side, perhaps where a strap was attached originally, suggesting that it may be a section of horse gear. The surface of the metal is heavily worn and corroded. Without further diagnostic details the object is difficult to date precisely as loops such as these were used as strap and harness fittings from the Iron Age onwards.

A copper-alloy single loop sub-rectangular buckle frame, pin missing, with forward projecting off-set bar. The dating of these are uncertain. Single loop rectangular buckles can date from c.AD1300 to at least AD1500, see Whitehead R. 2003, pp.26-27, nos.126-133. The recorder suspects that these buckles with forward projecting off-set bars are likely to be for use with horse harness, the dating possibly extending to at least the first half of 20th century AD?  This would give a wide date range of Medieval to the early Modern period. The thinking being that items use…

There is a very neat, central, circular, screw-threaded socket hole on the underside of the crescent which possibly suggests a Post-Medieval to Modern date (c. AD 1800-1950) although this is not definitive. The surface is patinated green consistent with copper-alloy corrosion. There are also patches of orange-brown corrosion on one side.
