Reverse: Winged lion of St. Mark. Legend reads: S M[ARCVS] [VENE]TI.  During the 15th and 16th centuries the English economy experienced a serious shortage of English-struck halfpennies. In order to fill this gap people began using foreign coinage such as the soldino, meaning 'little shilling', which entered into English currency through Venetian traders.

An incomplete, worn, silver Venetian Soldino coin of Medieval date (c. AD 1466-1474). It is a Type 2 Soldino, depicting the Doge kneeling left whilst holding a banner. The coin has had triangular clippings taken from it around 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock, and it seems as if much of the rim from 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock is missing. A complete Medieval silver soldino or 'Galley halfpenny' possibly dating to c.  AD 1501-1525. The obverse shows the Doge, as standard bearer of Venice, kneeling left, receiving the banner of St. Mark from the patron-saint standing right. The reverse may show Christ standing holding a cross, but it is very worn. No legends are legible. Soldini entered circulation via the Venetian trading fleet, and were used in place of silver half-pennies which were in short supply.  See DENO-67F499 on the PAS database for similar.
