Venetian soldini arrived during the 15th century with the annual trading fleet and were used as halfpennies, since they were in short supply, but as they were closer in value to a farthing, the government tried to suppress them.

Soldini were minted in Venice, and known as galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) because they were often brought into Britian by Venetian trading fleets.
