A very worn cut-half silver penny of either Richard I (AD 1189-1199) or John (AD1199-1216), struck by the moneyer Meinir in Canterbury. The obverse is too worn to be able to identify with certainty under which king this coin was struck, but it may well be Richard rather than John due to features of the reverse lettering; probably Class II, struck in AD 1189-1190. A worn and damaged Medieval silver short cross cut halfpenny probably minted in the reign of Richard I (1189-1199 AD) or John (1199-1216 AD). The degree of wear on the coin is extensive but the hair detail infers it is class 4 or earlier in the short cross series. The reverse appears to read [...]EM ON suggesting the moneyer is WILLEM and the mint therefore Shrewsbury. Accordingly the coin is possibly class 4a North, English Hammered Coinage vol 1(1994) p220: No. 968. 1194-1200 AD.

Obverse depicts a crowned ruler facing front with comma-shaped side curls, a crown with side pellets and a loose pelleted central fleur (c.f. North 1994, p225, Figs. 1, 4, and 5). Because the coin is cut in half, it is unknown whether the ruler held a sceptre. The reverse depicts a voided long cross with three pellets in each quadrant. The legends on both faces are incredibly worn, leaving a positive identification of this coin open to speculation. A general date can be given for this coin,…
