An early-medieval cut halfpenny of Aethelred II (978 - 1016), 'Last Small Cross' type (c.AD1009-17; North 777), mint and moneyer uncertain (possibly Aelfgar at Tamworth. Ref: North 1994: 160-1).
The bust style (only the back of the head visible) belongs to North's (1994: 161) 'West Midlands' type. The reverse inscription [ ]LFGAR ON[ ] is most likely to represent the moneyer Aelfgar at the mint in Tamworth.

In addition to being cut in half along the voided cross on the reverse, the coin is missing large chip between 3 and 4 o'clock as seen on the obverse.
