A silver medieval cut halfpenny attributed to the baronial coinage of William of Aumale, Earl of York, produced during the reign of Stephen (1135-1154) and dating to c. AD 1150, probably struck in York.  The design showing a knight advancing right with sword on the obverse, and a cross patée in quatrefoil with annulets on cusps and in margin on the reverse is known mostly from pennies of Eustace FitzJohn (North 929). Only two other examples in the name of William of Aumale are known (see EMC 2011.0025 and Fitzwilliam Museum CM.692-2005:&n…

Silver cut half of a short cross penny of King John (1199-1216), Class Vb2 (1205-1207), with one corner broken off. The bust is only partially visible, but the condition of the coin is good, and the two ringlets with pellets in the centre at the side of the head, the fine even strokes representing the beard and the division by the hand holding the sceptre of the word REX between the R and EX on the obverse indicate the coin belongs to Class Vb, and because the remaining eye is not broken it has to be Class Vb2, which dates it from 1205 to 1207.
