ION was one of four moneyers in Gloucester whose name appears on coins of Class IIb to Class IIIc. The legend on the obverse is hENRICVS REX.III, a version which was introduced with Class III, and this combined with the form of the beard (four small pellets on either side of a larger central pellet on the chin) and the lack of a sceptre or hand in the portrait puts it in Class IIIa. The half with the moneyer's name is missing, but the obverse inscription begins at 12 o'clock, which indicates that the class belongs to I - III, without the sceptre, and on the reverse the inscription reads /NG/LOV, which suggests the Gloucester mint. The moneyers in Gloucester were ION, LUC/AS, RIC/ARD and ROG/ER, all of whom only minted Classes IIb - IIIc. Obverse shows a very crude bust facing left. The hair is made up of multiple pellets and the beard of diagonal strokes. The mouth is depicted by two straight lines. The reverse shows a voided short cross with six-pointed stars in each quadrant. Spink 5029. Measurements: Diameter 17.88mm; Weight 0.72g
