A complete medieval silver 'short cross' cut halfpenny of Richard I (1189-99), Class 3 (North 967) dating to c. AD1190-94, moneyer: Turkil, mint: York. Ref: North 1994: 220; Mass 2001: 26-7. Obverse description:Crowned bust facing holding sceptre. Obverse inscription:[h]ENR[ICVS R]EX Reverse description:Voided short cross with a quatrefoil in each quarter. Reverse inscription:TVRKIL·O[N·EVER]. Class 3 coins are some of the least common 'Short Cross' types recorded by the PAS (along with Classes 2 and 8).

An early Medieval silver coin; a cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor (1042 - 1066), Pacx type with short cross reverse (1042-44; North 814). Mint: probably York; moneyer: probably Unolf. The coin is 17.5mm long, 8.3mm wide and 0.5mm thick. 0.41g. The resulting 'C-shaped' piece was probably used as a jewellery setting, most likely within an open-frame brooch. The remaining obverse legend displays evidence of having been filed. A cut half silver short cross penny. The identification of the moneyer as Nicole helps with the general identification. There were moneyers called Nicole at York and King's Lynn. However the Nicole at King's Lynn was only briefly active while the Nicole in York was minting for a longer period, so taken with the findspot in North Yorkshire it is likely that this coin was minted at York. The Nicole at York minted coins of Classes 4 & 5 (North 1994) covering the last half of Richard I's reign and the first half of John's (1194-1208). Although much of the bust on the obverse is …
