An incomplete (cut half) silver medieval penny of Henry II, dating to the period AD 1180-82. Class 1b1. Minted by Girard of Lincoln (note 'Girad' misspelling). John Naylor (pers. com.) notes that there are cut marks on the obverse, which run along the same line as the reverse cross suggesting that the cross was used as a guide to fraction the coin. c.f. North vol.II, no.963; SCBI no.377 See BM 1993,0923.16 for a complete parallel featuring the Girad misspelling.
