A cut silver voided short-cross penny of John (1199-1216), probably Class 5c, c.1204/5-1209. North 1994, p. 221 no. 971. Probably minted in London by the moneyer Walter. The distinguishing feature is the letter X on the obverse which is four wedges in the form of a "St Andrew's Cross".
Obverse: hE[...] REX; Crowned bust facing with sceptre. The sceptre divides the R and E in REX. Pearls on the crown and two hair curls shown as two crescents with a small pellet in each. The beard is made of short strokes or lines.
