A fragment of a Medieval silver coin; a broken, short cross, cut halfpenny of Henry III (1216 - 1272), Class 7b dating from 1222-1236. Mint of Canterbury identified on the coin, but probably mint of Bury St Edmunds issued by the moneyer Norman. It is 16.4mm long, 10mm wide and 0.5mm thick. It weighs 0.7g. North (1994) page 223 number 979. North, in footnote 455 suggests that reverse dies of 7a reading NORMAN ON CAN were probably intended for Bury St Edmunds and used there. The moneyer is probably Gilbert at Canterbury, but the reverse lettering is not grouped in the usual way reading: "[...]/(RT)[-]/ON C". The coin appears to be double struck, having moved in the die, leaving a wide space after the T of the moneyer's name, and between the HE and the N of HENRIC. It is 16.6mm long, 9.0mm wide and 0.75mm thick. It weighs 0.59gm. See North number 991/1 - 993, pages 226 - 227 of North (1994) Volume 1.
