An incomplete silver 2 reales of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, possibly from the Grenada mint. The coin is heavily clipped all round the edge removing any trace of inscription. The obverse has two small shields, the upper one with five pellets and the lower one with a central longitudinal line, mounted on to a large shield of the arms of Spain, all within a double linear border, which divides it from the legend that is missing. The reverse has a plain cross with alternate lions and castles in the angles of the cross, all within a double tressure of arches. Similar examples from Gre…

Silver 4 reales coin of Felipe II of Spain (1556-1598) minted between 1591-1598 probably at Potosi in Bolivia. The obverse bears the crowned shield with the arms of Spain and its territories. The legend is mostly missing, but should read PHILIPPVS:II:DEI GRATIA'. Rev.: Cross within double octofoil; lion rampant and castle in alternate quarters. Again the legend should read +HISPANIARVM : ET : INDIARVM REX, but only a few letters are visible. A distinguishing feature is the numeral IIII which appears horizontally to the right of the shield on the obverse with a pellet or annulet immedi…

A post-medieval gilded lead-alloy contemporary copy of a Spanish 4 reales of Philip II (1556-1598) or Philip III (1598-1621). The addition of the Hapsburg heraldry to the Spanish shield dates the 'coin' to after 1570. It is unclear whether this coin copies a Spanish-minted variety or one minted in the New World, although it may be copying the slightly squashed shape of the 'cob' coins minted in South America. The weight, at 6.8g matches the listed weights for 2 reales rather than 4 reales. The gilding would result in the coin not being an adequate imitation for circulation and woul…
