A gold sovereign of George III, AD 1760-1820. Minted in AD 1817. This coin is part of the coinage referred to as the last or new coinage that was minted between AD 1816-1820. The obverse shows a laureate head right. Obverse legend reads: GEORGIUS III D:G:BRITANNIAR:REX F:D: The exergue reads: 1817. The reverse shows St George mounted on a rearing horse right, spearing a dragon beneath. Reverse legend reads HONI . SOIT . QUI . MAL . Y . PENSE. A cast copper-alloy square coin weight of a Unite (22s). On one face is a crowned half-length bust of James I facing right with sceptre over right shoulder and orb in left hand. Around the edge of the bust is the legend ‘IR: BRIT’. On the other face is a Crown with XXII below it. Near the crown, in the left corner is a crowned I for James I stamped. The length of the weight is 18.0mm, the width is 17.3mm, the current weight is 9.68g though the original weight would have been 10.03g.
