Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for an angel - an 11 shilling coin of James I during the period of his second coinage (1604-1619 AD; Withers and Withers 1995, 22). The reverse is countermarked with a crowned 'I' in the top righthand corner. At 47.5 grains this weight is rather light even though weights are typically made slightly light and lose more weight through corrosion; angels in this period weighed 71 grains (ibid., p. 68).
