A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for an angel - an 11 shilling coin of James I during the period of his second coinage (1604-1619 AD; Withers and Withers 1995, 22). The reverse is countermarked with a crowned 'I' in the top righthand corner. At 47.5 grains this weight is rather light even though weights are typically made slightly light and lose more weight through corrosion; angels in this period weighed 71 grains (ibid., p. 68).

Copper alloy circular uniface weight for an Angel coin. The weight shows St Michael with angel wings spearing a dragon at his feet. It is of a British type produced between 1464 and 1619. The weight at 62.8 grains (4.06 grams) is low for an Angel (80 grains, reduced to 71 grains in 1604) but too high for a half Angel (40 grains reduced to 35.5 grains). It is likely to be an Angel weight, probably of the early 17th century. Weights were usually made for the minimum legal weight of the coin rather than the average and also lose some weight through corrosion.

It is stamped with St Michael slaying a dragon on one face, and a crown with āX ā¢ Sā below on the other. This stands for 10 shilling, the value of the coin. This weigh is a little light for the nominal value of the coin at 58.6 grains instead of 65.5.

A copper alloy angel (ten shillings) coin weight from the reign of Charles I. The circular coin weight has a diameter of 17.6mm, a thickness of 2.4mm and weighs 3.76g. Its original weight would have been 4.2g (Withers and Withers 1995, p. 14). On the obverse there is a crown with X, for ten, and s for shillings beneath. On the reverse is a depiction of an angel. The coin weight must date from between the start of the reign of Charles I in 1625 and 1642, when the angel denomination ceased to be issued (Withers and Withers 1995, p. 68).

A copper-alloy coin weight for a post-medieval gold angel. The weight weighs 4.6 grams and measures 16.8 mm in diameter. The obverse depicts the archangel Michael, spearing a dragon through its mouth. The reverse is unadorned.
Such coin weights were used from 1464, during the reign of Edward IV to the reign of Charles I, ceasing to be used at around 1632 (Withers and Withers 1993, 20). However, the weight was lowered from 80 grains to 71 in 1604 and lowered again in 1619 to 65 1/2 grains. As this weight measures 4.6 grams (70.5 grains) it is possible to say that it dates from betwee…

A cast brass square coin weight dating to the reign of James I between the years 1611-1620 AD (13.5mm x 13.5mm; thickness: 2.5mm; weight: 4.20g). The weight and value of 11 shillings concludes that the coin weight is known as an 'angel', especially with the angel on the reverse.
In 1620, there was an upsurge in the use of coin weights, and in the following decade many types were produced. They were square and made of brass and have the standard reverse of a crown surmounting the value of the relevant coin. Weights of this period bear an official counterstamp or verification mark whi…
