A complete Post Medieval copper alloy crown of James II (AD 1685 - AD1688 - in Ireland AD 1685 - AD 1691), dating to the period AD 1690 on the coin. Spink No.6578. During 1689 and 1690, James II operated a military campaign in Ireland from where he planned to mount an invasion of England, having been deposed by Mary and William of Orange. An incomplete contemporary copy of a silver crown of William III (1696-1702) dating to AD 1697. Third bust. Mint: London. Spink 3472. The coin appears deliberately cut revealing the copper alloy core beneath the silver plate. Obverse: Laureate draped bust right. Legend: GVLIELM[VS III DEI GRA] Reverse: Four shields within which are a harp, one lion rampant, three lions passant and three fleurs-de-lis, all around a central circle with the lion of Nassau within, creating a cruciform shape. CAROLVS D G MAG BR FR ET HI' REX Reverse: oval sheild between crowned C and R CVLTORES SVI DEVS PROTEGIT The left hand side of both the obverse and reverse appear very worn. However, the legends are very sharp and in mint condition. The wear is therefore a result of a worn die rather than coin use.
