They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged. It is 31.7mm in diameter and 2.5mm thick. It weighs 12.51gm. For reference see Spink Standard Catalogue of Coins, Volume II, number 6579 and also compare SWYOR-54DFD7.

A halfcrown of Charles I.
John Naylor comments:
I think this is most likely either an irregular coin or a forgery of base silver modelled on a Group IV Tower mint halfcrown. The main reference for Charles I is SCBI 33 (The John G Brooker Collection. Coins of Charles I (1625-1649)) by J J North and P J Preston-Morley (Spink 1984), for which similar irregulars & imitations are shown on Plates CXIII. Although none is an exact match, and this example is cruder. I think this is the likely scenario.

A silver struck halfcrown of Charles I (1625-49). This coin carries the triangle within a circle mintmark that defines the date to 1641-3 and is therefore, a Tower mint coin struck during at the beginning of the first Civil War phase and may either be under the King - or Parliament. The obverse has the King on horseback left with the cloak flying from the shoulder and the 'M' of MAG is conjoined into the 'A'. The reverse has the garnished oval shield.
The coin is dramatically clipped around the whole perimeter of the rim, there being at least five distinct heavily cut sections. …
