A complete, worn and revalued post-Medieval Potuguese silver tostão probably of João III (1521-1557) or Sebastião I (1557-1578), counterstamped with the figure '120'. This was a revaluation of existing circulating coins in February 1642 under João IV ('O Restaurador', 1640-1656), by which the silver was increased by 20%.
Obverse: [ ]GAIS (probably); Crowned square shield, illegible letter to left, letter (possibly B) below trefoill to right
Reverse: [ ]NO (or G)[ ]; Voided cross potent with possible symbols in angles. Counterstamped with figure '120' in one angle
