Copper alloy Irish halfpenny of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), mintmark trefoil, dated to 1601 on the reverse. The coin is worn and bent, but the crowned harp and the date 1601 is visible on the obverse and the shield with part of the inscription [POSVI DEVM ADIVTOREM] MEV on the reverse. Base silver and copper coins were produced as emergency coinage to help finance the campaign againt the Irish in 1601. There is a small hole near the edge of the coin which has torn away the edge at that point, which might have originally been for suspension. Cf. Spink (2002) p.153, no.6511
