Silver coin. An indeterminate silver half unit, probably an uninscribed silver half unit of the Corieltauvi. A small worn scyphate flan with indistinct traces of a motif on either side. It is most likely to be one of the more common issues: probably ABC1893 if inscribed. The latter is more likely given a faintly figured obverse. A worn silver Iron Age unit of the Kent Region / Cantiaci, struck in the name Solidus (c.40-43 AD). SOLIDV type. Obverse: SOLIDV on plain field, chain border. Reverse: Standing figure left, holding staff. As ABC, p.45 no. 474; VA 2073; BMC 1894-95. Measurements: Diameter 12.98mm, thickness1.57mm and weight 1.19g. Discussion: Rudd suggests that Solidus may have been a place name, or maritime stronghold of Cunobelinus of Kent. Although it is also possible that Solidus was a king who ruled briefly on behalf of Cunobelinus.
