Cast lead uniface token. Medieval or post-medieval. Mass: 21.2g, diameter: 38.3mm, thickness: 3.0 mm. Pitted grey/green surface. The front is decorated in relief with a six-foil and pellets within four concentric circles. In: "English Tokens, c.1200 to 1425", Mitchiner and Skinner (1983, p. 62) note that the six-foil design was the dominant series amongst London tokens from c.1350's -1430's. However, they add that the tokens have a fairly consistent diameter and thickness; around 14-15mm and around 1 to 1.5 g. The token recorded here is substantially larger, and may be mediev…

Copper-alloy French coin weight for an écu a la chaise of Philip VI (1328-50), the coin issued 1347-49. Diameter: 14.5mm, mass: 2.9mm. Paul Withers comments that: "The weight is most likely a near contemporary issue with the coin. It shows the king, wearing a crown, std on a throne, holding a sword in his right hand, and his left resting on a shield emblazoned with one, or more fleur(s) de lis." This is a crude example, and appears to have been filed. It has a heavily corroded green surface. Paul Withers adds: "The coin weighs around 4.5 gm, but the weights that one finds are normall…

A broken silver sterling imitation of an Edwardian type penny of Henry II, Archbishop of Cologne, 1306-32, Bonn Mint. In "Sterling Immitations of Edwardian Type", Mayhew states that the most distinctive feature of the coins issued by Henry II, Archbishop of Cologne is the "Irish" triangle around the bust on the obverse. (p.81). The coin described here does not have the Irish triangle - the mitred bust is set within a beaded circle. The reverse is a short cross fleuronee.
