An incomplete, slightly chipped, clipped, and cracked, medieval silver hammered chinfrão, or half reale grosso, of King Afonso V of Portugal (AD 1438-1481). Uncertain mint. Obverse: Crowned letter 'A' with an initial beneath it, possibly an 'L'. Pellets either side. Obverse inscription: Possibly 'ALFONSVS QVINTI REGIS:P' or similar. Reverse: Within a circle the Portgugese coat of arms, the quinas: five eschutcheons crosswise the dexter and sinister ones pointing to the centre, each semée of plates.
