Copper alloy French jetton or reckoning counter, depicting the shield of France on the obverse, which dates it to c.1415-1437, struck in Tournai, probably after 1423 when King Charles VII of France (1422-1461) introduced the silver Blanc à la coronelle (coin). Mitchener (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 227, No.688. Jettons first appeared in England during the reign of Edward I (1271-1307) and carried on to the end of the reign of Richard II (1377-1399). By that time, jettons began to come in to England from the Continent, initially from Tournai, now in Belgium, and t…

This jetton bears the 'Chatel Tournois', a stylised image of the Castle of Tours, and was probably struck between AD c. 1350 and c. 1415 (see Mitchiner, 1988, p. 187). The jetton has a dark green patina and is worn, particularly on the reverse. It measures 25.7mm in diameter, 0.6mm thick and weighs 2.54g.

A copper alloy Medieval jetton, probably clipped. It is a Paschal lamb jetton of west-central France. It dates to the 14th - 15th century. The legend is just nonsensical markings. This makes it difficult to say whether it was a "mouton" type, or the more common Bourges. Also in the late 15th century, paschal lamb jettons were being stuck in a variety of places. It measures 19.5mm diameter x 1.2mm thick, weighing 2.30g. There is no exact parallel to this in Mitchiner, although one example has a triple stranded cross fleury without a tressure - similar to this one, although with differe…
