A Early Medieval silver coin; a penny of Cnut (AD 1016 - 1035), Pointed Helmet type dating from AD 1024 - 1030, Style IV (York). It was struck by Brihtnorth at York. See North (1994) Volume 1, number 787 on page 168. The coin is bent on one edge and has some areas of damage where there are holes. It has a diameter of 19.0mm, thickness 0.9mm, and weight 1.0g.

NOTE: This coin was folded in half when found, snapping during an unfolding attempt. It has been professionally cleaned and restored. The fold can be seen most clearly on the reverse running from just left of the initial cross down the coin between the O and N (of ON) in the reverse inscription. Diameter: 17.88mm, Thickness: 0.84mm, Weight: 1.0gms

An incomplete Early Medieval silver coin; a penny of Aethelraed II (AD 978 - 1016). First hand reverse type depicting the Hand of God flanked by alpha and omega (probably Variety 1) and dating from about AD 979 - 985. See North number 766, and compare YORYM-91F4B0. The mint and moneyer are mainly illegible; the moneyer's name probably ended in STAN. Only part of the edge of the coin survives, so the legend is only visible between 5o'clock and 8 o'clock on the obverse. The coin is also bent. It is 16mm long, 16.8mm wide and 0.9mm thick. 0.68g.
