A copper alloy hammered coin: probably an Early Medieval Northumbrian styca of Eanred or Aethelred II, dating from AD 810-848. The coin is mostly illegible, with the central motifs and one inscription no longer legible. The extant partial legend probably reads [---] ED R[...], very tentatively suggesting, if this is on the obverse, a regal issue of either Aethelred (EDILRED) II, AD 840-848, or of Eanred (AD 810-840). Mint of Northumbria. The coin has a sub-oval flan with a maximum diameter of 12.92mm, and a thickness of 1.00mm. It weighs 0.67g. Compare SWYOR-7D9846, and see the hoard…

An incomplete, corroded coin of copper-alloy, probably an early-medieval Northumbrian styca of an unncertain king, dating c.790-860. The level of copper in the coin suggests it is a later variety, c.830-60. The 'obverse' appears to show a pierced plain cross above another motif in the centre, perhaps a cross-like star of 8 arms (cf. Pirie 1996, Fig 7, no 7) with seven pellets of the outer circle visible at at the top of the coin. The 'r…
