A worn and heavily corroded Post Medieval silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603 AD). The obverse is missing nearly all of its identifying features save for faint traces of the inner beaded circle and fragments of the legend. The portion of the legend that is legible reads: [E]LIZABETH [...] [REG]INA. The reverse is a long cross fourchee over a royal shield within a beaded circle, with a date above. The reverse legend is made illegible by severe corrosion. However, it is possible to identify the third digit of the date as a 7 and this in conjunction with the size and remaining obverse legend identifies the coin as an Elizabeth I, second issue (1561-1582 AD) sixpence, minted in London sometime in the decade of 1570. In spite of its poor condition the coin is mostly intact, with only a small v-shaped segment torn on the edge, bending the flan. In full, the obverse legend would read ELIZABETH D G ANG FRA (Z) HIB REGINA and the reverse POSUI DEU ADIUTOREM MEU which broadly translated means 'I have made God my helper'. Cf. North English Hammered Coinage (1991) p134, No. 1997.
