Counterfeit copper alloy cored silver plated coin, probably copying a Roman denarius of unclear emperor dating to AD 1 to 260. Unclear reverse type. Unclear mint. Only small amounts of the silver sheet outer coating remain but the size, thickness and the small amount of the design suggest it might be a denarius rather than a later, Post Medieval, silver coin that was copied.

Silver coin. Probably a denarius of an indeterminate Roman ruler, issue of 43-260. Burnt and crumpled with the loss of all features. Though early Roman material appears in the vicinity, the finder credibly suggests an association with Early Anglo-Saxon burials. As other finds suggest the presence of the cremation rite as well as inhumation, the poor condition of the coin might suggest it has passed through the pyre. Suggested date of reuse: Early Medieval, 475-550. Diameter: 19.5mm, Weight: 2.44gms
