Silver plated contemporary copy of a denarius of Faustina I (DIVA FAVSTINA), AVGVSTA, prototype struck at Rome, c. 141-50. RIC II c.f. 362
This little coin purports to be a genuine Roman silver denarius of Faustina the senior (Faustina I). It also carries the 'diva' inscription on the obverse, indicative of it having been struck after her death and deification in AD141. However, all is not as it should be, this coin is a 'Fourée', or an ancient fake, having a copper alloy core wrapped in a thin silver foil. That is evidenced by the small breaks in the surface on the drapes and the surface rubbing to the high relief areas.
The reverse depicts Ceres, goddess of agriculture; she carries grain ears and a torch used when she descended into the underworld in search of he daughter Persephone. The reverse design is however, crudely executed.
There is an overall brown patina with areas of the silver covering evident on the obverse. Despite its origins, it still makes it own historical note.
